How to Transfer Contacts from Your Old Verizon Dumbphone to Your New Smartphone

How to Transfer Contacts from Your Old Verizon Dumbphone to Your New SmartphoneOne great feature of smartphones is contact portability. When you get a new phone, you don't have to worry about transferring your address book over?it just happens automatically. But if you're a Verizon customer switching to a smartphone for the first time it isn't quite so straightforward, but it can be done.

Verizon actually has a helpful backup utility so you can transfer your contacts between phones fairly easily. You can even export them to a file to make transferring them over to your smartphone a lot easier. Just follow the instructions below for the type of smartphone you purchased to make the transfer in just a few minutes.

Android

  1. Log into your Verizon account and access the Backup Assistant.
  2. Select all of your contacts.
  3. From the drop-down menu, choose "Save as Type."
  4. Choose CSV and save your contacts as a CSV file.
  5. Log into your Google account and visit Google Contacts.
  6. At the bottom of the lefthand sidebar, click "Import Contacts" and choose the CSV file you created with Verizon's Backup Assistant. Once chosen, click the Import button. Google will import your contacts into your Google account and in a few minutes they should appear on your new Android phone.

iPhone

  1. Log into your Verizon account and access the Backup Assistant.
  2. Select all of your contacts.
  3. From the drop-down menu, choose "Save as Type."
  4. Choose CSV and save your contacts as a CSV file.
  5. If you're using a Mac, open up the Contacts app (called Address Book in OS X 10.7 and earlier), go to the File menu, and choose Import. Select the CSV file you created with the Verizon Backup Assistant and click the Open Button. If you're using iCloud, your contacts will transfer automatically. If not, sync your iPhone with iTunes to transfer them.
  6. If you're using a Windows PC, you can use multiple applications to store your sync. These include Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Addressbook (Windows XP) and Windows Contacts (Windows Vista and up). For these instructions we'll be working with Windows Contacts since it's the most common option. Open it up, click the Import button, choose "CSV" for the file type, and select the CSV file you created with Verizon's Backup Assistant. Windows Contacts will import them. If you're using iCloud, your contacts will sync with your iPhone automatically. If not, sync your iPhone with iTunes to transfer them.

As you can see, the process is pretty straightforward and you can make the transfer in just a few minutes. Moving from dumbphone to smartphone is an awkward transition, but moving your contacts over will help you feel more at home.
