Facing a protest by Occupy demonstrators, Pasadena police will bolster their already robust presence at the 2012 Rose Parade.
Pasadena police and Tournament of Roses officials have been negotiating with Occupy forces for several weeks on a plan that they hope will prevent any disruptions to Monday's parade. Pasadena officials are allowing the Occupy group to march on the parade route after all the official floats have passed.
Protesters intend to march with large banners that decry wealth inequality in the United States and to unveil a few colorful "floats" of their own, including a giant people-powered octopus, said Pete Thottam, an Occupy spokesman.
The octopus ? to be made out of recycled bags and stretching 40 feet from tentacle to tentacle ? is designed to represent the stranglehold that Wall Street has on the political process, he said.
Planned speakers include Cindy Sheehan, an antiwar activist who lost her son in the Iraq war; local Occupy activists; and possibly leftist documentarian Michael Moore.
Pasadena police Lt. Phlunte Riddle declined to say how many of the city's 235 sworn officers will work Monday, when the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl game are expected to attract as many as 800,000 people to Pasadena.
But the array of local police, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and state and federal law enforcement agents will be larger than usual, she said.
"We have brought on some additional resources since learning that Occupy intends to demonstrate," Riddle told the Pasadena Sun. "We use federal, state and local partners to make sure we have the appropriate resources on hand."
Riddle declined to say which agencies would assist the city.
In the past, the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have had a presence, as have the California Army National Guard and the California Highway Patrol.
Every year, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department enters into an agreement with Pasadena to provide support. Riddle said plainclothes and uniformed officers will be on hand.

Toshiba Doesn't Stand Behind Their Products Purchased my Toshiba Laptop and the casing started coming apart near the rear hinges. It was only 8 months old at the time, still carrying warranty. They would not cover the product because they classify any physical issue like this as DAMAGE, which is not covered by their warranty. If the hinges quit working, they say Damage instead of PHYSICAL FAILURE. If the casing starts coming apart, Toshiba says damage, again not Physical Failure of the product. They imply that the customer has damaged the laptop through negligence or other, NOTHING is their fault. If the CD table just falls out of the laptop, it is YOUR fault. It is Physical Damage, not FAILURE of the product... 12/09/2011
Unacceptable sound I don't expect much from laptop speakers, but the sound on this machine is simply unacceptable. In addition to the very poor quality of the sound, on many videos it is impossible to increase the volume to a usable level. External speakers will solve the problem, of course, but they will also reduce the portability that is one of the features of any laptop. Unless you plan to use external speakers exclusively, this machine may be a disappointment. 12/12/2011

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Russian court decided Wednesday not to ban a religious text central to the global Hare Krishna movement, rejecting claims that the text is "extremist" and ending a case that has angered Hindus around the world.
The Indian Foreign Ministry said it appreciated "this sensible resolution of a sensitive issue."
Prosecutors in the Siberian city of Tomsk had argued that the Russian translation of "Bhagavad Gita As It Is" promotes "social discord" and hatred toward nonbelievers, causing an outcry in India, where many considered the proposed ban a violation of the rights of Hindus in Russia.
The text is a combination of the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism's holiest scriptures, and commentary by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, which is often called the Hare Krishna movement.
The prosecutors had asked the court to include the book on the Federal List of Extremist Materials, which bans more than 1,000 texts, including Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and books distributed by the Jehovah's Witness and Scientology movements.
Alexander Shakhov, a lawyer for Hare Krishna devotees in Tomsk, said the group is satisfied with the court's decision.
"This judge's decision shows that Russia is becoming a truly democratic society," Shakhov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. "We are very excited about this victory."
Yury Pleshakov, a spokesman for the group in Moscow, said the book in question has existed in Russia for 25 years and has never inspired violence or extremist activity.
"On the contrary, this book teaches humane attitude towards all living beings," Pleshakov said.
The trial, which began in June, followed this year's ban on the construction of a Hare Krishna village in Tomsk and was based on an assessment by professors at Tomsk University, who concluded that "Bhagavad Gita As It Is" includes strong language against nonbelievers and promotes religious hatred and discrimination on the basis of gender, race, nationality and language.
The ruling came a day after Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna met with Alexander Kadakin, Russia's ambassador to India, and urged the Russian government to resolve the issue. Indian officials had last week appealed to high-level Russian authorities to intervene.
The Tomsk court had postponed the decision from Dec. 19, when protesters gathered outside the Russian consulate in Kolkata, and the speaker of India's lower house of parliament adjourned the body for several hours after members began shouting in anger over the proposed ban.
After hearing further testimony from academic experts on Wednesday, the judge ruled that the prosecutors' claims were unfounded.
The Bhagavad Gita "is not merely a religious text, but one of the defining treatises of Indian thought," said Indian Ambassador to Russia Ajai Malhotra in a statement. "The Bhagavad Gita has circulated freely across the world for centuries and there is not a single instance of it having encouraged extremism."
The Indian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday sought to soothe over any tensions.
"We appreciate this sensible resolution of a sensitive issue and are glad to put this episode behind us," ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash said in a statement. "This demonstrates yet again that the people of India and Russia have a deep understanding of each other's cultures and will always reject any attempt to belittle our common civilizational values."
The Russian Foreign Ministry had insisted the Tomsk court was not taking issue with core Hindu scripture itself, but rather with the author's commentary and poor translation in "Bhagavad Gita As It Is."
"I would like to emphasize that this is not about 'Bhagavad Gita,' a religious philosophical poem, which forms part of the great Indian epic Mahabharata and is one of the most famous pieces of the ancient Hindu literature," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said at a briefing in Moscow last week, adding that the book was first published in Russian in 1788.
Still, followers of the Hare Krishna movement in Russia saw the proposed ban as a result of continued intolerance of minority religions by the Russian Orthodox Church. Pleshakov estimates there are at least 150,000 Hare Krishna devotees in Russia.
"The current problem is, above all, the misuse of the law on combating extremism," Pleshakov said. "It is used to search for enemies where they can not even be defined."
In 2005, a Russian Orthodox archbishop asked the mayor of Moscow to ban the construction of a proposed Hare Krishna temple, calling the Hindu deity Krishna "an evil demon, the personified power of hell opposing God," according to Interfax. The temple was later allowed in a Moscow suburb.
During Chanukah, we recall the bravery of Jews centuries ago and the miracles that wrought their victory for freedom.
Yet, you don't need to look to centuries past in order to celebrate miracles today. In our own time, every day, Jews are achieving new miracles, great and small, and this Chanukah we celebrate their inspiring leadership.
These past five months, the Jewish community has helped shine a light on our own contemporary community heroes. For the third year in a row, the Jewish Federations of North America sponsored the Jewish Community Heroes Awards, a national online contest that recognizes and promotes selfless acts of kindness.
This year, over 300 people nationwide were nominated for making the world a better place. Over the course of three months, the Jewish Heroes contest generated over 230,000 votes, with many voters also encouraging others to participate and thereby further raising awareness of these modern-day Jewish Heroes.
The nominees themselves were simply inspiring. Whether they were creating jobs in the community, leading birthright trips with local universities, or simply helping others through troubled times, the nominees helped shine a light on incredible stories of heroism.
After months of public voting and a review by a panel of judges, Randy Gold of Atlanta, GA, was named this year's Jewish Community Hero and the recipient of a $25,000 grant. Randy and his wife, Caroline, founded the Atlanta Jewish Gene Screen back in 2010, after they discovered their second child, Eden, was diagnosed with Mucolipidosis Type IV, a preventable Jewish genetic disease. Jewish couples are required to go through pre-natal screening, but they were surprised to learn that they were only screened for eight of a possible 19 known diseases.
This experience with their daughter fueled their motivation to found the Atlanta Jewish Gene Screen. This organization creates awareness and educates rabbis, doctors and Jewish couples on the importance of genetic counseling and screening for preventable and life-threatening disorders commonly present in Jewish families. Their work so far has increased pre-natal screenings in Atlanta by an incredible 400 percent. They aim to one day have screening for all 19 Jewish genetic diseases as the standard medical practice for Jewish couples worldwide, so no one has to experience what they went through.
Heroes judge, actress and former star of Blossom, Mayim Bialik, said, "What Randy has done is lay the groundwork for changing the way Jewish people understand and create future generations with our genetics. Randy is literally taking one life and turning it into generations and generations of simchas as numerous as the stars of the sky!"
The Heroes grant is intended to help the Hero expand their work even further, touch more lives, and continue their efforts. Last year, Jay Feinberg was named the Jewish Community Hero for his work to found a Jewish bone marrow registry. After being diagnosed with cancer, Jay soon learned that a patient's best chance of finding a genetic match lies with those of similar ethnic background. There was an urgent need to add diversity to the registry, and time was of the essence. Jay went on to found the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation and it has been a great success since. Since becoming the 2010 Hero, Jay had been able to use the grant to make life-saving matches between five people with cancer and suitable bone marrow donors.
Along with this year's Hero, four finalists were also named, and their work highlights the diversity of the work that the Jewish Community Heroes Awards attracts. For example, their contributions to the community ranged from Hart Levine's organization, which aims to connect Jews and enable them to build their own communities across the Shabbat table, to Shana Erenberg's efforts to bring Jewish Special Education to the forefront in Chicago. The work of the other finalists, Jenine Shwekey and Tessa Gerall, are also examples of the selfless deeds Jews perform every day.
During Chanukah, as we celebrate timeless bravery and miracles, let us take a moment to recognize heroism and miracles in our time by thanking every one of this year's Jewish Community Heroes. As they each share the spirit of tikkun olam -- repair of the world -- they are all heroes, bringing light to darkness and leading the way for others to follow.
LG's FPR 3DTVs already featured lighter, cheaper passive 3D glasses than their active shutter competition, but next year the company will push its advantage even further with these new models. The three options available include the F310 (at right, above) which it says weighs 20 percent less than last year's default and are curved more for a better fit, the F320 (left) clip-on design for glasses-wearers and Alain Mikli-designed (the guy who made Kanye's shutter shades, among other high-end eyeglasses) F360 half-rim frames (middle). It also rolled out a press release trumpeting new Smart TV features for 2012, but beyond the updated remote and confirmation of Intel WiDi integration, it's pretty short on details. We're not seeing any Google TV tie-ins here, LG is focusing on its homegrown ecosystem which it says now offers 1,200 apps (of course, that probably includes the thousand or so recently added via its deal with Chumby). There's no word on pricing for the glasses, but after this and announcing a 55-inch OLED prototype, we're wondering what else the Lucky Goldstar folks will have up their sleeves at CES.

NEW YORK (AP) ? More than 1,600 people who filed lawsuits claiming that their health was ruined by dust and smoke from the collapsed World Trade Center must decide by Jan. 2 whether to keep fighting in court, or drop the litigation and apply for benefits from a government compensation fund.
For some, the choice is fraught with risk.
Federal lawmakers set aside $2.76 billion last winter for people who developed illnesses after spending time in the ash-choked disaster zone.
But to be considered for a share of the aid, all potential applicants must dismiss any pending lawsuits by the deadline and give up their right to sue forever over Sept. 11, 2001, health problems. Anyone with a lawsuit still pending on Jan. 3 is barred from the program for life.
The government program is attractive because it spares the sick from having to prove that their illness is related to Sept. 11, and that someone other than the terrorists put them in harm's way. But applicants won't know for months, or even years, how much money they might eventually receive from the program. That means some people may give up their lawsuits and find out later that they only qualify for a modest payment.
Others face a deeper problem. People exposed to trade center dust have blamed it for hundreds of illnesses, but currently the fund only covers a limited number of ailments, including asthma, scarred lungs and other respiratory system problems. That list does not currently include any type of cancer, which scientists have yet to link to trade center toxins.
But the very possibility that cancer could, someday, be covered has led some plaintiffs to drop their lawsuits anyway.
"In a sense, I've weighed my options and rolled the dice believing that the country I helped is not going to let me down," said former New York City police detective John Walcott, who retired after being diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in 2003.
He decided a few days before Christmas to drop his case, saying he had come to believe he would never get anything out of the legal system.
"The court system was set up for attorneys to make a lot of money," he said. He added that at age 47, he is tired of a court fight that had no end in sight. "I'm done with 9/11. I can't go forward with my life and family and live in peace with this hanging over me."
The special master overseeing the compensation fund, Sheila Birnbaum, acknowledged that the deadline would put some people in a tight spot, especially if they have an illness that isn't currently covered by the fund.
"That is one of the dilemmas," she said.
Birnbaum noted, though, that the law gives her no wiggle room. Anyone who has a lawsuit active on Jan. 3 will be disqualified from consideration, she said, even if their illness is later deemed to be covered.
"It's a hard decision that they have to make," she said.
The lengthy application process for the fund began in October, and Birnbaum said she expected thousands to apply. She could not say how many might do so by the time the fund closes years from now.
Lawyers who represent people with pending cases said they have been going over the pros and cons with their clients for several months, to see which option might suit them better.
"It's a complicated analysis," said attorney Gregory Cannata, whose firm represents about 100 people, including laborers brought in to repair damaged buildings and cleaners who swept tons of dust from office suites.
Cannata said that for the most part, his clients have decided to stick with their lawsuits, in part because of the possibility of a larger payout than they might receive under the government program.
Police officers, firefighters and city contractors who cleared away the 9/11 rubble make up only a small slice of the people facing the dilemma. Most of the more than 5,000 city workers who filed lawsuits claiming that the city had failed to protect them from the dust settled their cases in 2010, before the compensation fund was created.
Walcott was one of a few who rejected the deal, worth more than $700 million. Under the law, people who settled previously will be allowed to apply for government benefits. Any award they receive will be reduced by whatever they got from the legal settlement.
The tough decisions won't end Jan. 2.
In addition to people with legal claims already pending, thousands more New Yorkers have become ill because of exposure to the dust. They will have to decide in the coming years whether to sue someone over their illness or try their luck in the government program.
If too many people apply for aid from the compensation fund ? including people with common illnesses that may, or may not, have anything to do with Sept. 11 toxins ? the nearly $2.8 billion set aside by Congress may get exhausted quickly. Adding just 1,000 people with cancer to the program could eat up $1 billion, said Noah Kushlefsky, an attorney with the firm Kreindler & Kreindler.
"The real question is, how many more cases are there out there?" Kushlefsky said.
Enough, it seems, to keep both the courts and the 9/11 fund administrators busy for some time yet.
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria ? Witnesses say four security agents were killed in northeast Nigeria after a roadside bomb detonated near a military vehicle.
Witnesses say the blast happened Thursday afternoon in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state. The local police commissioner confirmed the blast occurred and said police and military were fighting with gunmen.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, though it comes as the region remains under siege by a radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram. The sect has been blamed for a string of assassinations and bombings in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law in Africa's most populous nation.

MADRID (Reuters) ? Spanish police arrested a 31-year-old man Wednesday and charged him with illegally leaking an early recording of a new Madonna song on the internet.
At least one demo recording of "Give Me All Your Love" was posted on the web in November, two months before the planned release of Madonna's first new album since 2008's "Hard Candy."
Police did not give the name of the man arrested in the city of Zaragoza in northern Spain, but said his initials were J.M.R. and that he was a big Madonna fan. He was charged and released, a police statement said.
The "Madonnaleaks" investigation began after lawyers for the singer -- who said in November that she was very upset over the leak -- traced the posting to Spain. Police said they found recordings of the song in a search of the suspect's belongings.
Intellectual property watchdgos have targeted Spain as one of the world's largest copyright violators. The Socialist government, which left office this week, prepared a bill aimed at shutting down file-sharing web sites providing copyrighted material. But the law was never sent to Parliament.

In one of the many-pronged attack that Apple has been making on Android, it's scored a victory at the International Trade Commission, where it's been determined that the idea, that if you see a phone number in an email or on a web-page and click it to call the number, is so special and wonderful that only Apple could possibly use it. It's rulings like this that make anyone with a modicum of technology smarts shake their heads and wonder why we let clearly non-technical people make decisions like this. Patents are supposed to protect inventions that are non-obvious to those skilled in the space. If you put a 100 groups of five engineers in rooms, asking them to design various smartphone features and interfaces around things like this, I'd bet 99 would come up with a similar feature. It's just natural.
In the meantime, Apple's statements about the ruling are equally ridiculous, given Apple's history of copying others (including Android):
"We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours."
Copying an idea and building on it is not "stealing." And if Apple had to build its devices without building on the ideas of others, it wouldn't have very much today. This whole thing is a joke, and it's rulings like this that make engineers have even less respect for the patent system.

COMMENTARY | Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, has made it known that he will form his very own presidential exploratory committee for a possible run for the Republican nomination in 2012. This will be the third time Paul has made a run at the Republican nomination, the last coming in 2008.
Paul faces an upward climb toward the nomination because of his many differing opinions on how the country should be run. His opinions differ from other members of his own party and are not in line with the views or opinions of other Republicans throughout the rest of the country. With Paul charging full speed ahead in his run for the White House, here are the top three disadvantages Paul faces in the coming months ahead.
No one in modern times has ascended to the presidency directly from the House, and Paul is unlikely to become the first. The main problem that most House members have is that they are not widely known outside their very own state. Even through Paul has won a few straw polls here and there, as well as running for president in the last election, most people do not know a whole lot about him or where he stands on the issues.
Ron Paul is the most un-Republican running for the party's nomination. Paul has a different position on almost every major issue that matters the most to Republican voters. These include foreign policy, drug legalization, and getting the country back on the gold standard. While being different may be great, when it comes to being a Republican who is running for the nomination of your party, being very different from everyone else isn't going to help your cause go very far unless you are able to come up with some great solutions to the problems that are currently facing this country that don't sound crazy..
The last disadvantage is that Paul has never run a national campaign in all 50 states. The amount of money needed to be raised is a lot more than Paul has ever raised. I don't believe that Paul has the ability, the funds, or the staff up for the task.
Paul also has to present himself to all Americans as someone who has the ability to get the job done as president; the congressman's overall record reflects a person who hasn't done anything in office but talk about "if this happens" or "if that happens" we would all be better off. What major issue has Paul ever gotten through Congress? The short answer is nothing that was ever important to anyone. Paul can talk about what he would do if he were in charge, but until he has shown that he has the leadership ability to lead this country going forward, the upward climb that he will face may be more than any one man can handle.
The other major Republicans who would be after the nomination have been governors of states, have led major reform as leaders of the House or Senate and have greatly impacted the lives of all Americans. These people have been on the national stage more often because Americans know who they are and where they stand on the issues.
Paul faces the sea of other Republicans who are also going to be running for president, and in an era in which you need to be front and center on the national picture, Ron Paul may find himself in the back of the room, slowly fading to black.
