Friday, Oct. 26, 2012: Freedom of religion, free ... - Bangor Daily News

Freedom and religion

A recent letter writer (? Republican Party platform,? BDN, 10/1) chastised Republicans for ?reasserting? the principle that ?freedom of religion? does not mean ?freedom from religion? and delivers a speculative parade of horrors. The writer seeks clarification.

As a professor of constitutional law for 25 years at the University of California, I know something about this subject. ?Freedom from religion? is another way of saying that governments may not aid or acknowledge religion in any way. The logical end of this position is absurd: If a synagogue catches fire, the fire department can?t respond. Less extreme results would include excision of ?So help me God? from the end of the traditional presidential oath of office or denial of tax exemptions to churches.

Freedom of religion means that the people are free to believe as they wish without state compulsion to the contrary and that the state may acknowledge their beliefs by, for example, making Christmas a holiday. Extreme secularists, such as the letter writer and, apparently, the Democratic Party, which begrudgingly admitted the possibility of a God (over the vociferous objections of many of the party?s convention delegates), would require a stern, perhaps Calvinist, rejection of any religious belief in the public square. That?s not what the founding generation had in mind.

A remarkable community

We at Treworgy Family Orchards want to thank our customers on both sides of Question 1 who have treated us with respect after the unfolding of events on our Facebook page (? Treworgy family farmers take down ?No on 1? sign after Facebook flap,? BDN, 10/22). To those who have been less than respectful, we bear no hard feelings.

Our farm?s mission is to be loving and welcoming to all our guests. Some of our guests expressed that they felt unwelcome and hurt by our sign. We decided to remove our ?No on 1? sign because we wanted to demonstrate that we can maintain our convictions, while showing love and respect for those who disagree with us.

Many people have suggested that it was unwise for us to bring our personal convictions into our business. We do not separate our personal lives from our business. Our farm is an extension of who we are, and when we welcome people to our farm we welcome them to our home.

We are grateful to be a part of this remarkable community that values real relationships more than political positions.

It?s only fair

There being too much money in politics and not enough to balance our federal budget may seem like two different problems, but they?re actually related.

Both are a result of immensely wealthy individuals and huge multinational corporations gaining too much power in our society. But there are steps the middle class can take to regain control of our democracy.

Maine, of course, has already gone a long way toward draining ?big money? out of politics with its Clean Elections system. Stellar state Senate candidates such as Geoff Gratwick of Bangor and David White of Bar Harbor, both Democrats, have as a result emerged. Now if Congress would get about overturning the awful Citizens United Supreme Court decision, which opened the door for billionaire kingmakers, we could demand some accountability from the supposedly independent committees that plague our elections with endless attack ads.

By the same token, Congress could get a start on reducing our national debt by asking a little more from those with the most to give. Tax cuts should be allowed to expire on the 2 percent of American households with annual income over a quarter million dollars (while extending middle-income cuts). This would bring in hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade for deficit reduction and strengthen middle-class programs such as Medicare.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe should help forge a bipartisan budget deal now that includes such slightly higher taxes on the rich. Let?s get the money out of politics and do some good for our national finances. It?s only fair.

Safe streets

Once again, Renee Ordway was right on target in her recent column about not feeling safe in certain areas local to Bangor and Brewer ( ?Bangor drug problem makes residents feel like ?hostages? in their own homes,? BDN, 10/6).

Neither do I. I live in Brewer and am in my mid 60s. I no longer walk the streets of our local cities and feel totally safe. She was right about people coming up to you who you don?t know. Some look and act intimidating, like they want to start something. I carry a 9mm pistol most of the time these days, sometimes concealed, sometimes not. I also carry a mace gun. The last thing I want to do is actually have to shoot someone, so I have options. Of course I?ll always try to walk away, but sometimes that is not a safe alternative.

The police do a great job but can?t be everywhere. The average arrival time can be up to six minutes. Sometimes we have to do what we need to do to protect ourselves, loved ones and, yes, even strangers.

Elections have consequences

Two years ago residents of Bangor and Hermon chose Republican Nichi Farnham to represent us in the Maine Senate. Now her first term is drawing to a close. It would be wise to review her work.

Farnham is a likable person and has worked for what she feels is the best interests of her community. Recently in the BDN, Farnham touted some of her accomplishments. Much was left unsaid, however.

Farnham failed to mention that she helped spearhead the attempt to end same-day voter registration. She also failed to mention her support of Maine?s new insurance overhaul bill that has increased rates for older Mainers.

She opposed issues important to women, earning a 33 percent rating from the Maine Women?s Lobby for the second session of the 125th Legislature. She opposed the right of child care workers to collectively bargain, sought to put unnecessary restrictions on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs and supported restrictions on unemployment benefits.

When faced with the choice of supporting her Republican colleagues? budget or standing up for the greater Bangor community, she voted along party lines, even when it meant cutting programs.

Farnham has supported policies that make it harder to live and work in Maine. I urge residents to send Democrat Geoff Gratwick to the Senate to help reverse the harmful policies that have come from the LePage administration and senators such as Farnham.

Tweetbot for Mac developer Todd Thomas and designer Mark Jardine talk process, production, and pricing

Tweetbot for Mac officially hits the Mac App Store today, and thanks to Tweetbot for iOS developer Paul Haddad simultaneously ducking behind him, and throwing him in front of the camera, I had a chance to chat with Tweetbot for Mac developer Todd Thomas about the newest Tapbots creation, and their first for OS X.

We covered everything from the impetuous for Tweetbot for Mac, to the development process, to the price point and the realities of living -- and selling -- in a post-restricted user token world.

To round things out, and get a little more clarity on the design side, I also had a chance to catch up with Tapbots' Mark Jardine over old-school text.

On the Tweetbot, and Tapbots in general, aesthetic has been iOS only until now, and what it was like translating that to the Mac:

One of my primary goals of Tweetbot for Mac was to keep the same aesthetic going throughout while still feeling like a Mac app. I'm not sure I succeeded, but I tried my best. It's kind of funny because Tapbots started out with very experimental UI ideas and have always been purposefully over-the-edge so to speak. I know it's definitely not for everyone, but it's been a very fun experience. It worked out really well for our utility apps, but pushing our look and feel onto a Twitter client was a huge risk. I'm well aware that many find it too busy, but this is after all a Tapbots app and the brand must live on through each app we do under this company. The funny thing is my design work is traditionally very minimalistic. I'd say to the point of being a bit bland. So it always makes me chuckle when people associate this look with my personal style. I guess I should take that as a compliment to my brand consistency?

Anyways, back to Tweetbot for Mac. Some early designs started out with the light-colored chrome familiar to most Mac apps. But it just didn't feel like Tweetbot to me. One of the big issues with going with a dark interface is by default, OSX apps look horrible with it. Look at Apple's Reminders app over a light background for example. The edges become muddy because the 1px app border just isn't dark enough. So we ended up hacking a few things together to get it to look right. There are a few other issues as a result, but we are working through them.

I knew from the very beginning that I would be taking the iPad app's navigation interface and applying it on the Mac. I think that ties the apps together well. Everything else was really a mix between what worked on the iPhone and what worked on the iPad. If something didn't work right, we'd rethink it all.

The biggest challenge was definitely solving all the problems that come up with this new (to me at least) platform altogether. When I design for the iPad, I miss all the constraints of the iPhone. When I design for the Mac, I miss the constraints of iOS. Having strict boundaries gives me time to focus on ever little detail. The scope of the UI and experience of apps on the Mac is just really large...especially when you start going custom with the UI. This app took us a year to develop and I still feel like there's still so much more to improve. It will get better though and I've learned a lot from this experience.

On the gesture shortcuts in iOS and moving those over to the Mac:

I'll be honest with you. It was Paul and Todd who spent most of the time figuring out the gestures and keyboard shortcuts. I just made sure nothing felt really out of place. Apple's trackpads/magic mice definitely helps make the transition from iOS to Mac a bit smoother.

The hardest decision related to input device differences was with the tweet drawer. Originally we planned on having our signature tweet drawer in the Mac app. But after a few prototypes we quickly learned that it just didn't feel right at all on the Mac. We tried a bunch of different things and ended up settling with the hover action we have now. I'm still not quite sure it's the best solution, but that's the conclusion we ended up with.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out our full Tweetbot for Mac review, and if you like what you see, grab the app via the link below.

Self improvement Solutions five Actions To Unlock Your Innovation

Innovation is a talent that everyone has. Some locate it less difficult to express their innovative side than other people but that doesnt mean you dont possess the ability. Just like riding a bike, studying how to drive and shaving it takes a bit of time and practice to accomplish your possible. It just takes time, practice and determination. In this post locate a couple of ideas on how you can unlock your possible with these five self improvement solutions and bring out your innovative side.

one particular. Dont listen to what other people say. If you have an idea, dont let other peoples input ruin your idea. If they dont like your idea then they can deal with it. You want to discover to do items for your self. Do you feel that Einstein and other excellent geniuses went on to listen to their pals about their recommendations? I dont assume so.

two. Workout Physical exercise relaxes your physique by sending endorphins by way of your physique. For the duration of Physical exercise a lot of men and women get a rush of creativity considering that they are so relaxed. Attempt it, run for a mile or 2 and see what takes place.

three. Locate your personal style Everybody is exclusive and style is as well special in folks also. A poet can be told from one more one just considering that of the words he uses or a painter considering that of the brush he utilised. If you can locate oneself a exclusive style that performs for you folks will discover what a beneficial asset you are due to the fact no one would have the similar talent as you.

four. Dont hide your self behind fancy gear Just given that you have the most high priced high tech gear doesnt make you the ideal. Yes it does give you an benefit but it is only a smaller one. Take this for example, do you believe a photographer with the newest camera on the market place that seriously doesnt discover photography at all is truly going to make it larger than a photographer who understands how to take photographs working with a disposable camera. No! The very same goes with writing, if you have an pricey laptop what use is it to you if you cant write. Make confident that you are fantastic with your ability, just considering that you have fancy gear doesnt mean youre the greatest!

five. Add some passion Passion is that additional bit of work that will take you to the subsequent level. Individuals with talent can do a fantastic job but somebody with passion will work difficult. Do you consider that that job position will fall into your lap just due to the fact you are the most talented? Perhaps, but other individuals will be determined to get that position and that could make them practically impossible.

These are just five of the quite a few factors that can unlock your innovation and hopefully you will take these into consideration to bring out your innovation and let every thing snowball from there.

Gluten and lactose-free ingredient substitute found for low-fat white sauces

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Consumers are increasingly demanding the development of ready-to-eat gluten and lactose-free food products that meet their needs and help improve their health. A recent study in Journal of Food Science, published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), shows how new white sauce formulations are being created to meet these demands.

Consumers with celiac disease often find that gluten-free products are of inferior quality compared with their traditional, non-gluten-free counterparts. Traditional white sauce is made with milk, flour or starch, oil, and salt. The study looks at how the use of vegetable protein source and gluten-free starches can make a type of sauce suitable for vegetarian, lactose intolerant and consumers with celiac disease.

The researcher replaced milk with soy protein which improves the structure of the sauce as well as makes it consumable for lactose-intolerant consumers, and at the same time, lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease and breast cancer. Traditional flour was replaced with gluten-free waxy starches such as corn and rice that each improves the structure of the sauce with minimal effects on color and taste. Inulin, a well-known functional ingredient that is known for reducing the risk of gastrointestinal and cardiovascular diseases, was used to replace the oil.

The results have shown that these sauces have a high degree of stability under refrigeration storage and good consumer acceptability.

Man who killed Texas pastor sentenced to death

By NBC News staff

A man convicted of capital murder in the strangulation death of a pastor in a north Texas church was sentenced to death on Tuesday.

A jury in state District Judge Mike Thomas' court deliberated for about 90 minutes before deciding on the sentence for Steven Lawayne Nelson, 25, of Arlington, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Nelson faced either the death penalty or life in prison without parole for killing the Rev. Clint Dobson at his Baptist church in Arlington in March 2011. Dobson was beaten, strangled with a computer extension cord and suffocated with a plastic bag. A church secretary was also brutally beaten and left for dead but survived.

Prosecutors said Nelson, a convicted felon, killed the pastor because he wanted to steal a car that he had seen in the church parking lot.

Nelson was convicted of capital murder last week by the same jury in Fort Worth that decided on his death sentence.

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

At trial, prosecutors showed text messages that Nelson sent the day after the killing. In one, he wrote: "I don't mean to brag. I'm a monster," according to The Associated Press.

Nelson's family members testified that he had a troubled childhood in which he suffered from attention deficit disorder and dysfunctional relationships, according to AP.

Defense attorneys asked jurors to spare Nelson's life, saying he didn't get the proper help he needed when he was growing up.

Recto abandons Senate body, withdraws sin tax report - Home ...

MANILA, Philippines - Sen. Ralph Recto on Monday said he is resigning as chairman of the Senate Committee on Way and Means and withdrew the much-questioned committee report on sin taxes.

Recto cited the disapproval of Malaca?ang of the Senate Bill No. 3299, which proposes to collect P15-billion from excise taxes on alcohol and tobacco products.

President Benigno Aquino III, with the Department of Finance (DOF) and the Department of Health, immediately thumbed down Recto's proposal on October 10 saying that it falls short from the government's expected P60 billion income from sin taxes on the first year alone.

"Sa ganito pong sitwasyon, then my only recourse is to irrevocably resign the chairmanship of the committee... I am stepping aside and relinquish my position to a senator who can better fight for what the Department of Finance wants," Recto said.

He also said that he is "withdrawing my committee report to give the incoming chairman a free hand in drafting a new one."

Ideally, the crafting of taxes is done with the Senate ways and means and committee and the DOF working side by side, and positions are supposed to be similar, he said.

"In crafting tax laws, there is one support mechanism [a ways and means committee chair] can't live without - and that is the backing of the executive," Recto said.

Recto, however, clarified that he is not altogether withdrawing his involvement in the crafting of the said law, but that he chose to give the new chair to start the report on a clean slate.

"DOH and DOF are dismayed with my report and many have said that I am an obstacle, but I will continue to participate in the discussion," Recto added.

Making a layer cake with atomic precision

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? Graphene and associated one-atom-thick crystals offer the possibility of a vast range of new materials and devices by stacking individual atomic layers on top of each other, new research from The University of Manchester shows.

In a report published in Nature Physics, a group led Dr Leonid Ponomarenko and Nobel prize-winner Professor Andre Geim has assembled individual atomic layers on top of each other in a desired sequence.

The team used individual one-atom-thick crystals to construct a multilayer cake that works as a nanoscale electric transformer.

Graphene, isolated for the first time at The University of Manchester in 2004, has the potential to revolutionise diverse applications from smartphones and ultrafast broadband to drug delivery and computer chips.

It has the potential to replace existing materials, such as silicon, but the Manchester researchers believe it could truly find its place with new devices and materials yet to be invented.

In the nanoscale transformer, electrons moving in one metallic layer pull electrons in the second metallic layer by using their local electric fields. To operate on this principle, the metallic layers need to be insulated electrically from each other but separated by no more than a few interatomic distances, a giant leap from the existing nanotechnologies.

These new structures could pave the way for a new range of complex and detailed electronic and photonic devices which no other existing material could make, which include various novel architectures for transistors and detectors.

The scientists used graphene as a one-atom-thick conductive plane while just four atomic layers of boron nitride served as an electrical insulator.

The researchers started with extracting individual atomic planes from bulk graphite and boron nitride by using the same technique that led to the Nobel Prize for graphene, a single atomic layer of carbon. Then, they used advanced nanotechnology to mechanically assemble the crystallites one by one, in a Lego style, into a crystal with the desired sequence of planes.

The nano-transformer was assembled by Dr Roman Gorbachev, of The University of Manchester, who described the required skills. He said: "Every Russian and many in the West know 'The Tale of the Clockwork Steel Flea'.

"It could only be seen through the most powerful microscope but still danced and even had tiny horseshoes. Our atomic-scale Lego perhaps is the next step of craftsmanship."

Professor Geim added: "The work proves that complex devices with various functionalities can be constructed plane by plane with atomic precision.

"There is a whole library of atomically-thin materials. By combining them, it is possible to create principally new materials that don't exist in nature. This avenue promises to become even more exciting than graphene itself."

Translation of social ideas into the language of HR and ...

As we are having again another?Google Hangout session on the HR topic this Wednesday (see this Facebook and/or this Google event) I just wanted to share with you my views on how I see the appreciation of Enterprise 2.0 within the HR sphere. Actually these notes of mine are the English answers I have given to Marco Minghetti of ?Il sole 24 ore? in the preparation to the Social Business Forum 2012. But as Italian is not everybody?s first language I am happy to share this with you.

Enterprise 2.0 (McAfee); Management 2.0 (Hamel); Social Organization (Bradley/McDonald): which is the best definition for the new model of 2.0 organization in the ?social business era?? How important is the idea of ?community? in this new model?

The key idea of the future organizational model is certainly turning around Gary Hamel?s systemic perceptions of a changing environment for the enterprises and the need to adapt fast and effectively to it. From this point of view the ?2.0? or ?social business? way just determines a new mean to help resolving these new challenges.

For playing the 2.0 game communities are certainly a central part. Bradley/McDonald explain the surplus of digitally enabled communities to socially construct the adaption of the organization. They are describing a roadmap to successfully set in place a new form of organization that is more effective in changing to environmental factors because of the use of social technology.

Last but not least McAfee defined the principles of how those social technologies are working and how they are generating value.

Summarizing ? none of these definitions are intended to define the ?2.0 organization in the social business era? because it?s not the technology that defines a new culture ? but that is an enabler for organizational change as well as a mean for organize in a more adaptive way. If we question which of the definitions helps best to advance the discussion and the adoption to these practices, then I would point to Gary Hamel. Because to advance the topic towards the next level it is important to acknowledge the organizational development perspective for the topic.

The new ?social? mindset for 2.0 organization requires a brand new set of managerial principles: openness, co-creation, collaboration? Which are the most important? And how you define them?

Personally I do not believe that ?social? is defining the needed ?managerial principles? but the overall increasing complexity and globally changing nature of business. Enterprises are complex adaptive systems and ?social technology? is a way to answer the business demands in a new and more effective way.

Therefore ? the nature of business requires already a more open, adaptive and collaborative way of organizing and coordinating the value generation in the enterprise. For this I like to return to Hamel?s ?21st management challenges?:

  • To advance organizations from a deadlocked state you need unconventional ideas and a corporate environment where those ideas get heard (democracy of ideas)
  • To move forward you need to turn ?ordinary employees into extraordinary innovators (amplify human imagination)
  • To avoid getting stuck we need a decision making process that is more directed by market principle than hierarchical allocation issues (dynamically reallocate resources)
  • To generate a new surplus in terms of efficiency and efficacy we need to harvest the positive benefits of an open and collaborative environment (aggregate collective wisdom)

The installation of ?social technology? enforces this demand ? as it supports openness and collaboration as well as it needs openness and collaboration to realize its added value (network effects).

Which kind of leadership does a 2.0 organization need?

I would like to cite five attributes mentioned in a essay by Russ Roberts and Paul Hirsch in a pre-social-age-book on the future of HR management by Loosey/Meisinger/Ulrich in 2005:

?Highly successful leaders posses five key attributes:
1. They are driven by a strong, personal vision of effective leadership.
2. They lay out a vision of success and engage others in the process of how to achieve it.
3. They are firmly rooted in the values and behaviors required of them.
4. They muster the courage to do what?s right and necessary.
5. They are modest, servant leaders dedicated to enabling their people to succeed.?

All of these characteristics are perfectly applying to the needed managerial principals of a ?social technology enabled? organization ? maybe paired with the appreciation that social technology is the enabler for the effective implementation of these principles.

The HR managers are often indicated as the most hostile to management 2.0. Is it true? And why?

I would not say that they are hostile to new ways of management and the advancements to make the organization more effective. Especially as those ideas are being discussed within the HR and OD sphere already quite some time ? and even before the age of social. But the HR is mostly disconnected to the beliefs and appreciations of the social technology as a mean for cultural change and change enabler.

The reasons for this is also related to the way of discussing the potentials of Enterprise 2.0 and Social Business as the new savior for the future of the enterprise. I think HR has already been involved in to many technology based approaches to advance the enterprise to a more collaborative and adaptive state (look at the Human Capital Management, E-Learning and Groupware approaches) but that failed to achieve the promised results.

In parts the social technology also brings disruption towards the function of HR ? as social networks bring transparency towards the company?s capabilities. So for finding the right staff member for my next project I do not need to ask HR anymore, but can eventually look into the tag cloud of competencies in the corporate social network to identify the right person. Therefore social technology also redefines the scope of HR which makes is menacing.

Social learning, Internal communication, change management: which are the HR processes more involved in the transformation of the ?hierarchical? companies in ?social organizations??

The journey towards the new form of organization enabled by social technology is an evolutionary process ? starting with enabling peers to understand the benefits of social technology, involving continuously more people into the socially enabled interaction and collaboration and eventually redefining the way of working and helping people to adapt to the new way of working. Therefore all of the mentioned task are important at different stages of the transformational process. And the order of the above mentioned terms shows IMHO already the right sequence.

Do you know some real success stories of new HR processes and tools consistent with the new 2.0 management model ?

As I am not taking in account the examples of social business technology and projects selling companies like IBM or CSC (because of their need to set an example of social business practice) as well as not the medium-sized company examples like in Germany Synaxon or Westerflex (because of their more entrepreneurial organization structure) I do not know of any success story yet. This is also difficult as most of the E20/Social Business initiative are just at the evolutionary stage of mastering the adoption curve and have not yet a transformational impact on the company.

But there are examples where the appreciation of the project and its effects on the organization are understood by HR and OD departments. For example in companies like Deutsche Telekom, Continental AG, Robert Bosch but also St. Germain or Alcatel-Lucent the E20 initiatives are supported by the HR department ? with a clear scope on the transformational impact.

So ? I think that for most of the matured projects (with the key characteristic of having overcome the tipping point and being perceived as a new way to solve business relevant communication and
collaboration challenges) HR will not miss giving the initiatives a second look and get involved within the next 12 month.

What about the ROI of an HR Department organized in a 2.0 way?

While most of the HR people have not yet taken the first step in taking any appreciation of the change enabling role of the E20 project, it is even quite more challenging to talk about the ROI of an HR 2.0 approach. As with all ROI related discussions it is important to have a business purpose first in order not to talk about a bubble generation. So disassembling HR to its key functions brings up the following three general purposes:

  • Finding the right staff by employer branding and recruitment processes ? social practices can enhanced both the employer branding as well as the recruitment process by the power of the masses. The key focus is on having the co-workers positioning and promoting the enterprise within their personal social networks as well as making their capabilities and competencies more accurately accessible throughout the activity tracking and tagging in internal social networks. This supports the reach and authenticity of the employer brand as well as a better performance in finding the right people. It even increases the corporate (and therefore HR!) performance on the secondary (network effects related) level as it involves the individual into the participatory process of a socially constructed corporate reality.
  • Helping to equip the human resources with the right capabilities and competences by training and development ? social initiatives are fostering the informal learning processes by micro-contents being shared and spread all over the internal social network as well as collaborative documentation efforts giving corporate knowledge at one?s fingertip. With the successful implementation of corporate knowledge environments and adhoc knowledge sharing about insights from business processes and activities the need for top-down organized training and personal knowledge as well as skill development lessens. This leads to cost reduction but also disruption that needs to be accepted by HR.
  • Aligning the individual talent development with leadership and culture visions ? The last but not least HR purpose is to build the corporate community as a positive as well as forward thinking and challenges taking group of people. As social networks increase the connections within the company, bring transparency to business activities and support the ?we?-feeling amongst the staff, it helps to develop towards a more empathic culture within the corporation. And this is set up much more sustainable than any onetime corporate event or corporate identification program.

So closing these reflections leaves out to say that the big challenge for the social business initiatives is to translate the social ideas into the language of HR and Organizational Development as these are the parties to get involved during the maturity stage of the E20 initiative. And both parties are perfectly equipped with visions for new forms of organization but are missing effective tools and means to implement these ? and social technology represents these means.

Home-based beer making brews over in Eastern Iowa | TheGazette

?

With All Hallow?s Eve on the horizon, Kent Ball looms above a 10-gallon tub of boiling brown liquid. His eyes focus intently on the bubbling concoction, one hand hovering on a nob controlling the heat, the other clutching a plastic oar, diligently stirring.

His visage is suggestive of a warlock and his caldron, but the beverage he boils is far less malevolent and much more delicious than any magical potion.

Ball is a home brewer. His lair is his garage in Solon, where he often is found brewing batches of beers.

Homebrewer Kent Ball adds malt as he brews one of President Obama's beer recipes in the garage of his rural Solon home on Sunday, September 16, 2012. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette-KCRG TV9)

?It?s a craft,? he says. ?It is cooking and chemistry all in one. I am a scientist by trade. I enjoy cooking, and I enjoy the end product.?

Ball is certainly not alone.

Home brewing ? which became legal when President Jimmy Carter signed a law in 1978 ? has reached a boiling point in popularity.

Due to the increased availability of ingredients and a relatively low overhead cost for materials and equipment, more and more Iowans are brewing their own beer, says Joseph Williams, owner of BIY Homebrew Supply in Marion.

?New folks have kept me busy on my equipment kits, which is really really cool,? Williams says. He estimates he has sold 20 in the last month. ?I think that is a direct result of the Iowa beer scene growing. People see that, know about home brewing, and want to see how hard it is.?

A basic kit runs around $70, and the specialty malts and grains for most 10-gallon batches will cost around $50 to $60.

With ingredients in hand, the process is pretty straightforward.

Earlier this fall, Ball weighed and measured malts before crushing and steeping them in 3 gallons of 150-degree water.

?We crush them to open up the individual kernels,? he says. ?We don?t want to obliterate them.?

Once the grainy goodness has had sufficient time to mingle with the water, more water is added and the brew is brought to a boil for an hour. During that time, malt syrup, hops, and in this particular brew, honey, are added.

A dash of yeast is the final ingredient before the liquid is placed in his 68-degree cellar to ferment.

?It?ll be done when it?s done, you can try to rush it, but it is a biological process, it will tell you when it?s done,? Ball says. ?And the way you know (the beer) is there is this foam on top. When the foam is gone, you are probably done.?

Ball said keys to good homebrewed beer are quality ingredients, sanitation and not being afraid to experiment.

?I have had people come in that do pepper beers. They actually put jalapenos in there and make a hot beer,? Williams says. ?But you also have people who are putting together their own pumpkin ales. And there are a lot of local folks in the beer club that do all kinds of sour beers.?

Tim Sines president of the Cedar Rapids Beer Nuts pours hot water over malted grain as he brews beer in his backyard Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, in northeast Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The group will hold its first home brewing festival, Cedar Rapids Beer Nuts Home Brew Festival, on Oct. 13 from 2pm to 6pm at Benz Beverage Depot. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette-KCRG)

The club is the Cedar Rapids-based Beer Nuts. Established in 2006, the group meets regularly to discuss technique, recipes and, of course, taste their creations.

?It is a pretty casual group,? says club member Matt Sulentic of Cedar Rapids.

The group has about 30 regular members.

?We have good beer, good guys and we are not top secret?? he says. ?We are not trying to hide our recipes. We want to share our recipes with the public and not have people thinking that home brewers are out to brew a bunch of beer to have a party. This is something we are passionate about and take seriously. This is on par with wine making and fine dining.?

That artistic side is something Williams focuses on when stocking his shelves.

?The home brewers in the area are keeping me on my toes?? Williams says. ?You can have your own home brew beers in any style you want. Maybe you want a chocolate rye wheat beer, there is nobody saying you can?t.?

Kent Ball's finished version of White House Honey Porter. Shot at Ball's home in rural Solon on Monday, October 8, 2012. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette-KCRG TV9)

Just call him Barack O-beer-ma

?

The 43rd President of the United States of America created a slight brouhaha when it was announced earlier this summer that two beers ? a honey porter and ale ? are being brewed in the White House kitchens.

And while some may question the practice, one home brewer ? who agreed to try his hand at concocting Obama?s honey porter on our behalf ? said he thinks the more beer fans the better.

?Clearly the guy is a fan of good beer,? Kent Ball of Solon says. ?Is it a political move to appeal to the every man? I don?t know, and I really don?t care. But I was impressed that it seems like he is going to shun the scotches, wines, and champagnes and he prefers a beer.?

If you do too, grab a home-brew kit, this recipe, and brew your own beer, Obama style.

?

Obama?s Honey Porter

? 2 (3.3 pound) cans light unhopped malt extract

? 3/4 pound Munich malt (cracked)

? 1 pound crystal 20 malt (cracked)

? 6 ounces black malt (cracked)

? 3 ounces chocolate malt (cracked)

? 1 pound White House Honey (regular honey may have to suffice)

? 10 Homebrew Bitterness Units (HBUs) bittering hops

? 1/2 ounce Hallertaur Aroma hops

? 1 package Nottingham dry yeast

? 3/4 cup corn sugar for bottling

?

In a 6 quart pot, add grains to 2.25 quart of 168 degree water. Mix well to bring temp down to 155 degrees. Steep on stovetop at 155 degrees for 45 minutes. Meanwhile, bring 2 gallons of water to 165 degrees in a 12 quart pot. Place strainer over, then pour and spoon all the grains and liquid in. Rinse with 2 gallons of 165 degree water. Let liquid drain through. Discard grains and bring liquid to a boil. Set aside.

Add two cans of malt extract and honey into the pot. Stir well.

Boil for an hour. Add half of the bittering hops at the 15-minute mark, the other half at 30-minute mark, then the aroma hops at the 60-minute mark.

Set aside and let stand for 15 minutes.

Place 2 gallons of chilled water into the primary fermenter and add the hot wort into it. Top with more water to total 5 gallons if necessary. Place into an ice bath to cool down to 70 to 80 degrees.

Activate dry yeast in 1 cup of sterilized water at 75 to 90 degrees for 15 minutes. Pitch yeast into the fermenter. Fill airlock halfway with water. Ferment at room temp (64 to 68 degrees) for three to four days.

Siphon over to a secondary glass fermenter for another four to seven days.

To bottle, make a priming syrup on the stove with 1 cup sterile water and 3/4 cup priming sugar, bring to a boil for five minutes. Pour the mixture into an empty bottling bucket. Siphon the beer from the fermenter over it. Distribute priming sugar evenly. Siphon into bottles and cap. Let sit for one to two weeks at 75 degrees.

Mitt Romney meatloaf, shot on Monday, October 8, 2012. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette-KCRG TV9)

Mitt?s go-to meatloaf

?

In the interest of fairness and bipartisanship, once we decided to ask local home brewer Kent Ball to brew one of President Barack Obama?s beer recipes, we also reached out to Mitt Romney?s Eastern Iowa campaign offices.

The former Governor of Massachusetts is a Mormon and therefore does not consume alcohol, so a favorite beer recipe was out of the question. However, good beer is always better with good food, and the Romney camp delivered.

Shawn McCoy, the Iowa communications director for Romney for President, pointed us to Ann Romney?s ? Mitt?s wife ? meatloaf cakes.

Instead of one conventionally sized loaf, this recipe makes six smaller ones. They are coated in a ketchup-based glaze about midway through the baking process so that it caramelizes as the loaves finish cooking.

McCoy said the recipe has no historical significance to the Romney clan, but that it is one of Romney?s go-to meals.

?

Ann Romney?s Meatloaf Cakes

Time: 45 minutes/Yields: 6 small cakes (3 to 6 servings)

Meatloaf cakes

? 1 1/2 pounds ground beef

? 4 slices bread, crumbled into small pieces, or 3/4 cup dried breadcrumbs

? 1 large egg

? 1/4 cup chopped onion

? 1/4 cup lemon juice

? 2 teaspoons seasoned salt

Sauce

? 1/4 cup ketchup

? 1/4 cup brown sugar

? 1 teaspoon dry mustard

? 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

? 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

?

For the meatloaf cakes: Heat oven to 350 degrees. In large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, crumbled bread or breadcrumbs, egg, onion, lemon juice and seasoned salt. Mix lightly but thoroughly and shape into six small loaves. Space evenly on baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes; meanwhile, prepare sauce.

For sauce: In small bowl, mix together the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, cloves and allspice. When the meatloaf cakes have baked for 15 minutes, brush each loaf with sauce and return to the oven. Continue to bake until the meatloaf cakes are 165 degrees in the center when tested with an instant-read thermometer, about 20 more minutes.

If desired, serve with scalloped potatoes and steamed vegetables. Pass additional sauce separately.

T-Mobile's holiday roadmap leaked: LG Optimus L9, HTC Windows Phone 8X spotted

DNP TMobile's holiday roadmap leaked LG Optimus L9, HTC Windows PhoneX spotted

According to a leaked roadmap on TMoNews, the magenta carrier appears to have a few tantalizing offerings coming its way this holiday season. A curious BlackBerry handheld dubbed the Armstrong, a color refresh of the Samsung Galaxy S II, a possibly Android-flavored Huawei Summit and the LG Optimus L9 are all slated to launch just on or before Halloween. Going into the next month, we see the HTC Windows Phone 8X making the pre-Thanksgiving cut with a potential debut of November 14th. Notably absent are the Samsung Galaxy Note II and the Nokia Lumia 810, but that doesn't mean they won't be there when December rolls around. Of course, this info didn't come through official channels, so we wouldn't bank on any of the handsets as holiday gifts just yet.
