Big East break-up picks up speed

(AP) ? The breakup of the Big East's football and basketball schools appears to be on the fast track.

The major college football members will meet in Atlanta on Friday to discuss the departure of the seven basketball schools that are planning to leave the conference and create a new league.

According to media reports, the basketball schools plan to have their new conference up and running for the 2013-14 school year and will pay the football schools to keep the Big East name and play its conference tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Big East Commissioner Mike Aresco says no deal has been completed between the two groups but "some of this stuff is clearly coming down to the wire."

US, allies planning direct aid to Syrian rebels

NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports that the U.S. will announce Thursday that the US plans to provide aid directly to a select group of Syrian rebels.

By Andrea Mitchell and Catherine Chomiak, NBC News

In a policy shift, the United States on Thursday will announce plans to channel aid directly to selected groups of the Syrian opposition rather than through non-governmental agencies, senior White House officials told NBC News.

The aid plan, being?forged with European allies, will still not include weapons, despite the calls of a growing number of American senators?? but the definition of "non-lethal" aid will be more broadly defined, the officials said, noting that details of the plan were still being finalized.

Secretary of State John Kerry, who is in Paris on his first foreign trip in his new position,?said earlier that?Washington is looking for new ways to help rebels fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad and speed up political transition in the country.

"We are examining and developing ways to accelerate the transition the Syrian people seek and deserve," Kerry said during a news conference with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

The Washington Post?has reported that?the administration was planning to start sending non-lethal equipment like body armor and armed vehicles to Assad's foes.

Among the items likely to be included in the direct aid to rebels are meals and medical kits, The Associated Press reported.

Kerry was expected to announce the new contributions at the Rome conference, in addition to tens of millions of dollars intended for rule of law and governance programs.

For its part, the Syrian opposition is planning to demand "qualitative military support" at talks with major powers in Rome this week, a leading figure in movement to oust Assad told Reuters on Wednesday.

"We ask our friends to give us every backing to achieve gains on the ground and help reach a political solution from a position of strength, not weakness," said Riad Seif of the Syrian National Coalition umbrella group said a day before a Friends of Syria conference in the Italian capital.

"We expect to receive political, humanitarian and qualitative military support,? he said.

Secretary of State John Kerry, left, shakes hands after a news conference with French Minister of Foreign Affairs Laurent Fabius at the Foreign Ministry in Paris on Wednesday.

The Friends of Syria group is composed mainly of Western powers, Gulf Arab states opposed to the Iranian-backed Assad, and Turkey.

The West and Syria's neighbors have been looking for a solution to the two-year-old civil war in Syria that has claimed around 70,000 lives and sent 860,000 refugees fleeing abroad. The conflict pitting the largely Sunni rebels against the Alawite-dominated Assad?government?threatens to destabilize countries in the region, most notably Lebanon.

In Paris, Kerry said the United States wanted the Syrian opposition's advice on how to accelerate a political solution to help halt the bloodshed and protect the interests of the Syrian people.

"We want (the Syrian opposition's) advice on how we can accelerate the prospects of a political solution because that is what we believe is the best path to peace, the best way to protect the interest of the Syrian people," he said ahead of meetings with the opposition on Thursday.

"As I have said, that may require us to change President al-Assad's current calculation. He needs to know that he can't shoot his way out of this. So we need to convince him of that and I think the opposition needs more help in order to be able to do that. And we are working together to have a united position," Kerry added.?

But Iraq's prime minister warned that a victory for the rebels in Syria would create new problems, by creating a haven for extremists and worsening sectarian tensions in the Middle East.

In an interview with the AP, Nouri al-Maliki stopped shy of expressing support for the Assad regime.

During his first overseas trip as secretary of state, John Kerry hinted at a policy shift saying that Syrian opposition isn't going to be 'dangling in the wind wondering where the support is.' NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

The prime minister's remarks reflect fears by many Shiite Muslims in Iraq and elsewhere that Sunni Muslims would come to dominate Syria should Assad be toppled.

"If the world does not agree to support a peaceful solution through dialogue ... then I see no light at the end of the tunnel," al-Maliki said.

"Neither the opposition nor the regime can finish each other off," he continued. "The most dangerous thing in this process is that if the opposition is victorious, there will be a civil war in Lebanon, divisions in Jordan and a sectarian war in Iraq."

As the bloody Syrian conflict wears on, there is a growing number of U.S. legislators urging greater action, including some type of military support for the rebels.

Sen. Roger Wicker, a member of the Armed Services Committee, appearing on NBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports on Wednesday.

"I hope our new secretary of state will listen carefully to the more responsible of the Syrian opposition," said Wicker, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Asked if that meant the United States should provide weapons, he said: "I think there are ways and means for us to see that is done. I think Secretary of State Kerry is going to be listening to those proposals, and I think if he does what he's being told at the highest levels of the Pentagon, we may be moving, yes, to military aid for the responsible opposition groups."

He agreed that there is a risk to those weapons falling into the hands of radical extremists infiltrating the opposition movement, but said.

"There's no question it's a concern, but this has gone on too long. The Assad regime needs to fall."

Andrea Mitchell is NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent. Catherine Chomiak is an NBC News producer. Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

UK study confirms GSK flu shot link to rare sleep disorder

LONDON (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline's Pandemrix swine flu vaccine has been linked to cases of the rare sleep disorder narcolepsy in children in a scientific study in England that confirms similar findings elsewhere in Europe.

The vaccine, more than 30 million doses of which were given during the H1N1 flu pandemic in 2009-2010, contains a booster, or adjuvant, and may have triggered an adverse immune reaction in some children at higher genetic risk of narcolepsy, scientists said in new research published on Wednesday.

Researchers at Health Protection Agency (HPA) who published the study in the British Medical Journal said the at least 14-fold increased risk they found had "implications for the future licensing and use of adjuvanted pandemic vaccines".

Narcolepsy is a life-long disorder and thought to be an autoimmune disease in which patient's immune system attacks the body's own cells. Its symptoms include frequent bouts of daytime sleepiness and in its severe forms it also causes night terrors, hallucinations and cataplexies - when strong emotions trigger a sudden loss of muscle strength.

Studies in Finland, Sweden and Ireland have also found a Pandemrix link to narcolepsy, and GSK says more than 800 cases linked to the shot have been reported in Europe.

A spokesman for the British drug maker told Reuters on Wednesday: "We really want to get to the bottom of this and understand more about the potential role of Pandemrix in the development of narcolepsy."

He added, however, that GSK believes "the available data are insufficient to assess the likelihood of a causal association between Pandemrix and narcolepsy."

As Reuters reported earlier this month, scientists investigating the link further are homing in on the vaccine's adjuvant, a booster called AS03, and analysing whether its super-charging effect may have played a role.

According to the UK results, vaccination with Pandemrix at any time was associated with a 14-fold increased risk of narcolepsy, whereas vaccination within six months before onset of the disease was associated with a 16-fold increased risk.

"The increased risk of narcolepsy indicates a causal association," said the research team led by Liz Miller, a consultant epidemiologist with the HPA. They added, however, that because of variable delay in diagnosis, the risk may be overestimated because vaccinated children may have been referred to specialist sleep clinics more rapidly.

Scientists said the risk translated into around one in 50,000, lower than studies have found in other countries such as Finland and Sweden where Pandemrix was used more widely and the risk was around one in 16,000 to 17,000 children vaccinated.

In total, more than 30 million doses of the GSK shot were given in 47 mainly European countries during the H1N1 flu pandemic. It was not used in the United States.

The UK study looked at 75 children aged between four and 18 who were diagnosed with narcolepsy from January 2008 and who attended sleep centres across England. Eleven of the children had been vaccinated with Pandemrix before their symptoms began.

Finn stressed that Pandemrix is the only vaccine linked to this problem: "There is nothing to suggest that it occurs after other flu vaccines or vaccines against other diseases."

Narcolepsy is thought to be due to loss of function in cells called hypocretin cells in one of the brain's sleep centres.

John Shneerson, a consultant physician from the Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge who co-led the UK study, said Pandemrix may have triggered an immune reaction against those cells, causing narcolepsy in some children who were genetically vulnerable.

Experts say around 25 percent of Europeans have a genetic profile making them more susceptible. Narcolepsy has no known cure, but specialist doctors say symptoms can be treated with drug combinations aimed at re-regulating the sleep-wake cycle.

An Orlando treasure | College Park Community Paper

City Commissioner Robert Stuart

City Commissioner
Robert Stuart

As Spring rolls around, we get a chance to enjoy wonderful weather and many great outdoor amenities in Orlando.? There are community events?College Park?s own Sunday in the Park is March 10th.? But in keeping with February?s topic of highlighting a city amenity, I wanted to focus this month on Beautiful Leu Gardens.

Leu Gardens is the historical home of Mr. Harry P. Leu and his wife, Mary Jane, which was generously donated to the City in 1961.? It?s an amazing 50-acre botanical oasis, minutes from downtown, designed to inspire visitors to appreciate and understand plants.? Leu Gardens also boasts the Leu House Museum, which reveals turn-of-the-century living for the families who once called this property home.

The history of the house and gardens began long before the City?s involvement- in 1885, John Thomas Mizell built a farmhouse on the site (his family plots are still located on the property). In 1902, Duncan Pell bought surrounding land that today accounts for the majority of the garden?s acreage.? Joseph Woodward was the next owner and made more improvements to the home.?Then, after a period as a rental home, the Leu family purchased the home and gardens in 1936.

Harry Leu was a native Floridian, born in Orlando.? His parents moved to Orlando from Maitland on the day Mr. Leu was born!? He was a very good businessman, whose work ethic was engrained at a young age.? The story is that ?Can Do Leu?, at the age of 10, bought hand-held fans for 5 cents and turned around and sold them at a family funeral for 10 cents. After graduation, he took a job setting up machinery at Cain O?Berry Boiler Company.? Not satisfied, he set off for New York to take a business course and returned home at the request of his mother. He again worked at the boiler company and, after positions as a bookkeeper and clerk, eventually purchased enough stock to have controlling interest in the company.? He changed the focus of the company to industrial supplies and Harry P. Leu Inc was off and running.

He then met and married Mary Jane and together they purchased the home for $40,000.? They spent time remodeling and focused on their joint love of gardening.? They traveled the world to find unique specimens and grew plants that should have been impossible to cultivate in Florida?s extreme climate.? By 1950, the Leu?s had started to allow public viewing of the gardens.

In 1950, Harry sold his business and devoted his time to philanthropy and his gardens.? When he and Mary Jane donated their property to the City, they put in specific clauses to ensure that the property remain a garden, open to the public, and that none of the acreage would be sold or used for any other purpose.

Please come and enjoy this legacy that was left to all of the residents of Orlando. March is a great time to enjoy the

gardens.? March 16th and 17th is their Annual Spring Plant Sale.? Admission is free and open to the public from 9:00a to 5:00p each day.? This is a great way to enjoy this amenity, support local vendors and beautify your own property at the same time. For more information, go to leugardens.org.

Their website also boasts information about many other great events that occur on a monthly and annual basis, such as their monthly children?s storytime, movie date nights and their annual jazz and blues stroll in April.

Thanks for your continued support and I hope you get some free time to enjoy a stroll around Leu Gardens this month!

Broccoli Boosts Liver Detox Enzymes | Care2 Healthy Living

Researchers just found out that the boost in detoxifying enzymes triggered by cruciferous vegetable consumption may last for weeks!

Last spring in my Care2 post The Best Detox I described this amazing phenomenon in which a phytonutrient produced by broccoli can enhance the function of our so-called phase II enzyme system that aids in the excretion of foreign molecules. For example if you feed people broccoli and Brussels sprouts, they clear caffeine quicker as you can see if you click on the above video. This means that if you eat a lot of these healthy vegetables you?d actually have to drink more coffee to get the same buzz because your liver is so revved up.

15 Ways to Use Broccoli

What about the carcinogens that I wrote about in my last three posts, Estrogens in Cooked Meat, Avoiding Cooked Meat Carcinogens, and Cancer Growth Blockers: Green Tea & Garlic? In the studies on Long Island, women that established increased breast cancer risk in those eating grilled meats found that the risk appeared greatest in women with the low fruit and vegetable consumption. Maybe having a side of broccoli can help your body deal with the carcinogen load? Researchers decided to put it to the test.

In the above video I detail a study in which subjects were fed cooked meat meals with and without broccoli and Brussels sprouts. You can see how dramatically the levels of these carcinogenic compounds circulating in their bodies drops. Now this wasn?t a surprise; that?s what cruciferous vegetables do?boost our liver?s ability to clear chemicals from our body. What blew the researchers away was the fact that when the veggies were taken away liver function remained enhanced?even two weeks later.

So there appears to be a prolonged beneficial effect of cruciferous vegetable consumption. You can eat broccoli days or even weeks before the big barbeque and still retain some protection. Of course if you grill veggie burgers instead it would be a non-issue. Since heterocyclic amines are byproducts of muscle tissue reacting to high heat, you can even deep-fry plant foods and still none of these carcinogens are formed.

For more on broccoli?s superpowers see my video Sometimes the Enzyme Myth Is True. You can overdo it, but apparently only at extremely high doses (see?Liver Toxicity Due to Broccoli Juice, Overdosing on Greens, and?How Much Broccoli Is Too Much?).

In health,
Michael Greger, M.D.

What?s?next

Barnes & Noble said the offer will be considered by a committee of three independent directors. But there is no set timetable for the?process.

NEW YORK ? The last remaining national bookstore chain is being taken off the shelf and dusted off for?sale.

Barnes & Noble?s founder Leonard Riggio disclosed in a regulatory filing Monday that he wants to acquire the company?s stores and website, but not the business that makes the Nook e-reader or the company?s college bookstores. No price was?disclosed.

It?s the latest attempt by a company founder to take back control of all or part of a company he started. Best Buy?s co-founder Richard Schulze is mulling a bid for the electronics retailer, and Michael Dell earlier this month announced a $24.4 billion deal to take the namesake computer company he founded?private.

The deals are a way for executives to exert more control over companies without the need to run everything by shareholders. In all of these cases, the founders have devoted decades to the businesses, and the companies are struggling to survive in a changing retail?landscape.

?When you?ve got control outside public eye or public market, you can invest and translate your strategy at your own pace,? said Peter Wahlstrom, analyst at Morningstar. ?It?s him believing he can run it better by himself without the distraction of the digital side. He believes the brand has value that?s not being recognized by?investors.?

Barnes & Noble, based in New York, has been struggling to find its place as more readers have shifted to electronic books and competition has grown from discount stores and online competitors. The company, which has 689 bookstores in 50 states and 674 college bookstores, has been trying to avoid the fate of its former rival Borders Group, which did not adapt to the growing threat of the Internet and e-books and went out of business in?2011.

Technically, Riggio, who is chairman of the chain, didn?t found the original Barnes & Noble store in New York when it opened in 1917. But he bought the store and brand name in the 1970s. Under his leadership, Barnes & Noble became one of the pioneers of the ?big box? format in which national chains would set up large stores that offer a wide selection of merchandise under one?roof.

The company also pioneered bookselling in general. In 1975 it began offering 40 percent off New York Times best sellers, which was then unheard of in the bookselling?business.

Throughout the 1980s, the company expanded through acquisitions. It bought B Dalton Bookseller in 1987 and BookStop in 1989. Then it went public in 1993 and established its website in?1997.

But the company was hurt by Internet retailers like Amazon.com and discounters such as Wal-Mart and Costco expanding their book selections. Barnes & Noble has been proactive, investing heavily in its Nook e-book readers and a digital library. It struck a deal with Microsoft last April to create a Nook subsidiary. But the Nook faces competition from other devices like Apple?s iPad Mini, Amazon?s Kindle and Google?s Nexus tablet. And the unit is far from profitable. Earlier this month, the company said it expects Nook media revenue of less than $3 billion in fiscal 2013. It also anticipates a loss for the unit before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization to exceed the $262 million loss recorded in its 2012 fiscal?year.

This follows a report from the retailer in January that its Nook unit revenue fell 12.6 percent to $311 million during the critical holiday period. Overall sales during the holiday period fell 10.9 percent at bookstores and online compared with a year ago. Barnes & Noble is scheduled to report third-quarter results?Thursday.

Barnes & Noble bookstores, though, have been profitable even though they?re facing falling sales. The company has broadened its offerings in stores and sells more high-margin games, educational toys and other nonbook items to improve?results.

In its fiscal second recent quarter ended Oct. 27, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the retail segment ? which includes the stores and the website that Riggio wants to buy ? doubled to $28 million, helped by selling higher-margin products. Revenue from that segment fell 3 percent to $996 million. Overall, the company?s net income totaled $2.2 million, up from a prior-year loss of $6.6 million. Revenue was nearly flat at $1.88?billion.

Monday?s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said that Riggio, who is Barnes & Noble?s largest shareholder with nearly 30 percent of the company?s shares, will seek to negotiate a price with the company?s board and pay for the deal with cash and debt. Riggio is making the offer in order to facilitate the company?s review of its strategic options for separating its Nook business, according to the?filing.

Virus shows promise as prostate cancer treatment

Feb. 25, 2013 ? A recombinant Newcastle disease virus kills all kinds of prostate cancer cells, including hormone-resistant cells, but leaves normal cells unscathed, according to a paper published online ahead of print in the Journal of Virology. A treatment for prostate cancer based on this virus would avoid the adverse side effects typically associated with hormonal treatment for prostate cancer, as well as those associated with cancer chemotherapies generally, says corresponding author Subbiah Elankumaran of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg. The modified virus is now ready to be tested in preclinical animal models, and possibly in phase I human clinical trials.

Newcastle disease virus kills chickens, but does not harm humans. It is an oncolytic virus that hones in on tumors, and has shown promising results in a number of human clinical trials for various forms of cancer. However, successful treatments have required multiple injections of large quantities of virus, because in such trials the virus probably failed to reach solid tumors in sufficient quantities, and spread poorly within the tumors.

The researchers addressed this problem by modifying the virus's fusion protein. Fusion protein fuses the virus envelope to the cell membrane, enabling the virus to enter the host cell. These proteins are activated by being cleaved by any of a number of different cellular proteases. They modified the fusion protein in their construct such that it can be cleaved only by prostate specific antigen (which is a protease). That minimizes off-target losses, because these "retargeted" viruses interact only with prostate cancer cells, thus reducing the amount of virus needed for treatment.

Retargeted Newcastle disease virus has major potential advantages over other cancer therapies, says Elankumaran. First, its specificity for prostate cancer cells means it would not attack normal cells, thereby avoiding the various unpleasant side effects of conventional chemotherapies. In previous clinical trials, even with extremely large doses of naturally occurring strains, "only mild flu-like symptoms were seen in cancer patients," says Elankumaran. Second, it would provide a new treatment for hormone-refractory patients, without the side effects of testosterone suppression that result from hormonal treatments.

About one man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and one in 36 will die of this disease. Men whose prostate cancer becomes refractory to hormone treatment have a median survival of about 40 months if they have bone metastases, and 68 months if they do not have bone metastases.

Hagel confirmed as defense secretary

Former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel testifies at his Senate Armed Services Committee confirmation hearing on Jan.??The Senate on Tuesday voted to confirm former Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense, overcoming a fierce campaign by some GOP lawmakers to block President Barack Obama's nominee.

Hagel's nomination, which required support from just a majority of the chamber, passed 58-41.

Four Republicans voted to approve Hagel's nomination: Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska and Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama.

Tuesday's vote ended a tumultuous confirmation process that began the moment Obama announced Hagel as his choice to replace outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Despite Hagel's tenure in the Senate, many of his former colleagues refused to endorse him for the defense post, pointing to his past comments about the U.S. relationship to Israel and Iran's nuclear program.

Even some Democrats showed hesitancy about confirming Hagel at first. It was not until he made a series of personal visits to key members of the party that he was able to secure their support.

During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Hagel faced a grilling from senators on the panel who pressed him on a wide rang of topics. Hagel's performance was disappointing, but the White House stood by its choice.

The first attempt in the Senate to end debate fell short in the face of an unprecedented GOP filibuster two weeks ago, with Democrats just one vote shy of the 60 needed to proceed to confirm Hagel. (The tally showed 58 votes in favor, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid changed his vote to ?no? as it was needed to secure the right under parliamentary rules to bring up Tuesday?s vote.)

Last week 15 Republicans sent a letter to Obama urging him to withdraw Hagel's nomination, citing his record and comments he made in the past about Iran's nuclear weapons program. The White House dismissed the request.

Now that he has been confirmed, it remains unclear clear how the sustained battering will affect Hagel's tenure at the Pentagon. But the rough handling he got from his fellow Republicans and former colleagues shows one thing for sure: The former lawmaker cannot count on getting the benefit of the doubt from Congress as he moves to deal with spending cuts that start coming into force on Friday, or takes on challenges overseas like the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Acer intros its first Android-based all-in-one, the Smart Display DA220HQL (hands-on)

Acer intros its first Androidpowered monitor, the Smart Display DA220HQL

Android-powered monitors / all-in-ones aren't exactly a novel concept, but it's definitely a new frontier for Acer. The company is just dipping its toes into the space with the Smart Display DA220HQL, which it's showing off here at Mobile World Congress. If you've never heard of such a thing, Acer is hoping you'll use as a kitchen PC, or as an external monitor for keeping an eye on things like email.

The 21.5-inch, 250-nit, 1080p panel makes use of VA technology (like some other Acer monitors, actually), which provides viewing angles on par with IPS. Which is to say, they're wide, and colors stay vibrant regardless of whether you're standing off to the side or you've got the screen pushed down at a near-flat angle. As far as connectivity goes, you've got three USB ports, as well as micro-HDMI for hooking this up to your PC. There's also an Ethernet jack, a microSD slot supporting 32GB cards and a 1.2MP front-facing camera if you want to use Skype or some other app for video calls.

As you can see in the gallery and in that main shot up there, this is mostly clean Android, which isn't a surprise since Acer isn't known for saddling its tablets and phones with heavy skins. Still, like recent Iconia Tabs we've tested, it has the Acer Ring UI for quickly launching apps. Even then, it's easy enough to ignore if you're not into it. On the inside, you've got a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP 4428 CPU and 8GB 1GB of RAM to keep performance hopping, which is plenty -- this is, after all, a mobile OS we're talking about, even if it does live inside what appears to be an all-in-one PC.

Other design notes: that speaker grille up front has a funky circular pattern, which we're not really digging. But hey, to each his own. We do appreciate the relatively narrow bezel, though the backside and front face have a few too many glossy bits. Even so, it's a nicer design than what ViewSonic had to show at CES. (Besides, how many people are going to see your monitor's rear end anyway?) As far as availability goes, we so far know this will hit Europe in March for 399 euro. It's said to be US-bound, too, though no word on pricing. For now, we've got some hands-on shots below for your viewing pleasure.

Update: That's 1GB of RAM and 8GB of ROM. Sorry for the confusion, folks!

Koryolink, a joint venture between Egyptian company Orascom Telecom Holding and North Korean state-owned Korea Post and Telecommunications Corporation (KPTC), has set up a 3G service for visitors into the country. The service, which is not available to locals, won?t come cheap. A $100 Wi-Fi hotspot and $200 SIM card will be needed, after which 2 Gb of data will cost $300, and 10 Gb for $525. Phone calls abroad will cost $0.50 a minute to European countries like Switzerland and France, and $7 a minute to the US. Calls to South Korea, however, are blocked. According to the AP, services typically banned like Twitter and Skype will be available on Koryolink?s network. North Koreans are blocked from the global Web, and only allowed some 3G services such as MMS messaging and subscriptions to the state-run paper, Rodong Sinmun. Calls to foreign numbers are also blocked. This news comes just after the country started to allow foreigners to bring their own phones into the country to use with Koryolink SIM cards. It?s not clear if the new uncensored service will be extended to SIM cards that are available to visitors, so you can skip buying the hotspot. Koryolink is 75 percent owned by Orascom. Orascom has a 3G license in North Korea that was awarded in 2008. Its censored service to the locals had about 1 million subscribers as of February 2012. The country?s capital of Pyongyang has a population of about 2 million.

Liver stem cells grown in culture, transplanted with demonstrated therapeutic benefit

Feb. 25, 2013 ? For decades scientists around the world have attempted to regenerate primary liver cells known as hepatocytes because of their numerous biomedical applications, including hepatitis research, drug metabolism and toxicity studies, as well as transplantation for cirrhosis and other chronic liver conditions. But no lab in the world has been successful in identifying and growing liver stem cells in culture -- using any available technique -- until now.

In the journal Nature, physician-scientists in the Pap? Family Pediatric Research Institute at Oregon Health & Science University Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Portland, Ore., along with investigators at the Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research, Utrecht, Netherlands, describe a new method through which they were able to infinitely expand liver stem cells from a mouse in a dish.

"This study raises the hope that the human equivalent of these mouse liver stem cells can be grown in a similar way and efficiently converted into functional liver cells," said Markus Grompe, M.D., study co-author, director of the Pap? Family Pediatric Research Institute at OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital; and professor of pediatrics, and molecular and medical genetics in the OHSU School of Medicine.

In a previous Nature study, investigators at the Hubrecht Institute, led by Hans Clever, M.D, Ph.D., were the first to identify stem cells in the small intestine and colon by observing the expression of the adult stem cell marker Lgr5 and growth in response to a growth factor called Wnt. They also hypothesized that the unique expression pattern of Lgr5 could mark stem cells in other adult tissues, including the liver, an organ for which stem cell identification remained elusive.

In the current Nature study, Grompe and colleagues in the Pap? Family Pediatric Research Institute at OHSU Doernbecher used a modified version of the Clever method and discovered that Wnt-induced Lgr5 expression not only marks stem cell production in the liver, but it also defines a class of stem cells that become active when the liver is damaged.

The scientists were able to grow these liver stem cells exponentially in a dish -- an accomplishment never before achieved -- and then transplant them in a specially designed mouse model of liver disease, where they continued to grow and show a modest therapeutic effect.

"We were able to massively expand the liver cells and subsequently convert them to hepatocytes at a modest percentage. Going forward, we will enlist other growth factors and conditions to improve that percentage. Liver stem cell therapy for chronic liver disease in humans is coming," said Grompe.

Alcatel One Touch Fire joins the Firefox OS cuddle party, we go hands-on (video)

Alcatel One Touch Fire

ZTE may have had a head start in the Firefox OS race ahead of MWC, but Alcatel's also got something similar to ride on the waves of some "500 million Mozilla users." Suitably dubbed the One Touch Fire, this entry-level phone is basically a rehash of the budget One Touch T'Pop announced back at CES, packing a 3.5-inch HVGA TN display, a 1GHz processor, 256MB RAM, 512MB storage and a 3.2-megapixel camera. There are also the usual bunch of radios: WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, FM radio and UMTS 900/2100 and 850/1900/2100 (up to 7.2Mbps for download and 5.76Mbps for upload). Underneath the removable 1,400mAh battery you'll find a microSD slot that'll take anything up to 32GB (a 2GB card is included), as well as a slot for an old-school Mini-SIM card.

We got the chance to play with the Fire earlier today and while the glossy plastic body -- in either orange or pink -- felt solid enough, the performance wasn't quite there yet: the touch and software response were significantly sluggish, as you'll see in our hands-on video after the break. On the brighter side of things, the surprisingly large loudspeaker on the back produced some punchy bass, but don't expect too much from its audio quality. Alcatel has a few more months to grease up the phone before its June launch across Latin America and Europe, so we'll be able to give it a proper score then. Press release after the break.

Las Vegas seen as dangerous even as crime rate drops

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Variously known as an adult playground and Disneyland for grown-ups, Las Vegas brands itself as a place where tourists can enjoy a sense of edginess with no real danger.

But a series of high-profile episodes of random violence amid the throngs of tourists is threatening Sin City's reputation as a padded room of a town where people can cut loose with no fear of consequences.

A car-to-car shooting and fiery crash that killed two bystanders and an aspiring rapper Thursday followed a bizarre elevator stabbing and a movie theater parking lot shooting.

Though crime has been falling on the glitzy stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard that houses most of the city's major casinos, tourism officials worry that vacationers and convention planners could begin to steer clear of the town because of a perception of mayhem.

"We are concerned because it can create misperceptions about the safety of the city, the safety of the Strip," said Gary Thompson, spokesman for Caesars Entertainment, which owns 10 resorts in the tourist zone, including Caesars Palace and Paris Las Vegas.

Casinos are particularly worried about convention business, which helps fill rooms and gambling tables between weekends. Corporate planners can swing the market with a few decisions, said Gordon Absher, spokesman for MGM Resorts International.

"And that decision will bring thousands of people," he said. MGM operates several major casino-hotels, including CityCenter, where Thursday's convulsion of violence originated.

Violent crime, which includes murder, rape, robbery and assault, in the city's main tourist hub fell 13 percent in 2012, from 256 to 223 incidents, and is down 11 percent for the first part of 2013, with 50 incidents reported. The number of rapes has fallen by more than a third.

There have been two homicides just off the Strip this year, in addition to the three deaths Thursday, compared to none in the area during the first month and a half of 2012.

Had they taken place elsewhere, the incidents that made headlines in recent weeks would never have become national stories, Thompson said. But when the crime happens in a city that welcomes 40 million visitors a year, people tend to care even if they haven't seen the neon lights in years.

"It's like, 'I was there! I stayed in there in Las Vegas! I walked that part of the Strip!'" he said.

The spate of violence started just before the new year, when a man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, an Excalibur hotel-casino concierge clerk, before fatally shooting himself.

The following week, a blackjack dealer was wrestled to the ground at the Bellagio with razor blades in both hands. She is charged with killing a 10 year-old girl and then slashing her co-worker's face.

On New Year's Eve, a man allegedly fired a gunshot into the floor of the crowded Circus Circus casino during an argument. A Saudi air force sergeant is accused of raping a 13-year-old boy in the rooms above the same night.

A nighttime shooting outside a Strip movie theater left two people critically wounded earlier this month. Last week, two random men allegedly assaulted a visitor in the elevator at the Mandalay Bay property, tackling him and stabbing him in such a frenzy that they also stabbed each other.

During the same period, Las Vegas courts sentenced a Florida teacher for killing a stranger with a single punch after trading words in a casino bathroom, and heard the case of two law students charged with beheading an exotic bird at the Flamingo casino-hotel.

The shoot-'em-up car chase that closed the Strip for 12 hours Thursday was the most public and deadly incident yet.

A person in a luxury SUV opened fire on an aspiring rapper in a Maserati near one of the busiest intersections on the iconic corridor. As the bullets flew, the Maserati ran a red light and crashed into a taxi, which burst into flames. The taxi driver, a passenger and the rapper were killed, and six people were injured.

Casino executives say they do all they can to keep visitors safe, with armies of guards, networks of high-definition survielence cameras and undercover security workers scattered throughout nearly every major attraction.

"Unless you are a complete idiot, you're not going to want to commit many crimes in or around a casino because you're going to get caught," Thompson said.

But catching a criminal isn't the same as stopping the crime.

Commissioners in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, are weighing steps to increase safety, including installing additional cameras in public spaces and broadening the sidewalks. In October, they banned potentially dangerous objects including fireworks, knives and toy guns from the Strip.

But real guns remain permissible. Nevada's relaxed gun laws, including the ability to carry them openly, have made Las Vegas an attractive spot for shooting ranges and gun shows.

Some observers think police should step up their presence on the Strip, just as they did after three slayings in 2011.

"Clearly they should be looking into this because they have had a string of incidents now, and while they've all been random incidents, they all did happen," said David Schwartz, the Director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

On Thursday, police spokesman Jose Hernandez said the department had no plans to send additional officers to the Strip, noting that crime remains relatively low for a town that accommodates so many visitors each day.

But with violent crime, as with so much else in Vegas, perception may outweigh reality. As a place built on the promise of letting loose, the city must work extra hard to banish all fear of danger, said Tony Henthorne, a marketing professor at the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration in Las Vegas.

"It's important for any destination that relies on tourism for a major percentage of its income to appear safe," he said, "and also actually to be safe."

Turn a Flashlight into a Long-Lasting Mobile Device Charger

Turn a Flashlight into a Long-Lasting Mobile Device ChargerBruce Mueller was looking for a way to charge his phone for a couple of weeks while off the grid. So he combined the Mintyboost from Adafruit (designed for two AA batteries and usually tucked into an Altoid tin ) and combined it with his D-battery Maglite, for higher capacity charging.

With a little tinkering of your own, you could create your own flashlight-Mintyboost. Bruce writes:

Removing the bulb and reflector, I created a space to hold the mintyboost board. By disassembling (breaking) a bulb, power can be drawn from the bulb socket.

I sliced it in Makerware, medium quality (.27 layers, 2 shells, 0% infill). It sticks to the plate like glue ? take your time and a nice spudger to get it off...

He also offers the 3D plans for the Mintyboost-holding bracket.

Head and neck cancer molecular tumor subtypes documented

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the seventh most common form of cancer in the United States, but other than an association with the human papillomavirus, no validated molecular profile of the disease has been established. By analyzing data from DNA microarrays, a UNC-led team has completed a study that confirms the presence of four molecular classes of the disease and extends previous results by suggesting that there may be an underlying connection between the molecular classes and observed genomic events, some of which affect known cancer genes. The clinical relevance of the classes and certain genomic events was demonstrated, thus paving the way for further studies and possible targeted therapies.

The study was published in the Feb. 22, 2013 issue of the PLOS ONE.

Neil Hayes, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine and senior author, says, "Cancer is a disease caused by alteration in the DNA and RNA molecules of tumors. A cancer results when broken molecules initiate a cascade of abnormal signals that ultimately results in abnormal growth and spread of tissues that should be under tight control within the body.

"However, most common tumors, including head and neck cancer, have relatively little information in the public record as to how these signals coordinate to create different patterns of abnormalities. This study is among the largest ever published to document reproducible molecular tumor subtypes. Subtypes, such as those we describe, represent attractive models to understand and attack cancers for treatment and prognosis."

Dr. Hayes is a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and national co-chair of the Data Analysis Sub-Group for The Cancer Genome Atlas, a program of the National Institutes of Health.

The team, composed of investigators from UNC and five other institutions, analyzed a set of nearly 140 HNSCC samples. By searching for recurrent patterns known as gene expression signatures, they were able to detect four gene expression subtypes. The subtypes are termed basal, mesenchymal, atypical, and classical based on similarities to established gene expression subtypes in other tumor types and expression patterns of specific genes.

In spite of being the seventh most common form of cancer in the United States, HNSCC is relatively under-studied in comparison to other tumor types, e.g. breast and lung. By leveraging the similarities found in the gene expression subtypes, the results of this study provide a connection to a range of well-established findings and additional insight into the disease.

Funding for the study was provided by a Clinical/Translational Award from the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University Cancer Research Fund, and a grant from the National Institutes of Health (K12-RR-023248).

Juliet Izon: Why I Won't Be Changing My Name on My Wedding Day

My name is Juliet Kathryn Izon. When I was born 27 years ago -- the progeny of two English majors -- I was named Juliet for its poetic Shakespearean roots, Kathryn for my mother, and inherited the Spanish-by-way-of-the-Philippines surname Izon (that's EE-zon, folks) from my father.

JKI, my initials, have been emblazoned on everything from my sturdy L.L. Bean backpack in middle school to -- my latest find! -- a retro tortoiseshell necklace I've been wearing to work almost every day. The prep-school girl within me has managed to give up my near-pathological adoration for pink and green and grosgrain belts, but I do believe the habit of initialing everything is most certainly here to stay.

And I am, I would venture to stay, more attached to my last name than most. Perhaps this comes from the decades of correcting the legions of people who insist on pronouncing it EYE-zon. The French, unsurprisingly, seem to be the only ones that get it right at first glance, which only strengthens my belief that I am a true Frenchwoman manqu?. Regardless, I have had to spell ("Yes, that's "Z" as in "Zebra...") and annoyingly correct the pronunciation of my last name since I first learned how to speak. For the record, that was incredibly early. I was a gifted child.

And so, since there are no boys in my family, the name Izon more or less ends with my sister and me (we'll save the conversation about my future children's surname for another post, shall we?). I never gave this much import until recently, when I became engaged and everyone started asking me what I planned to do about changing my name. "Well," I managed to stammer, "I really like my last name? It has a Z in it!" This was met with mostly confused stares and an awkward leap to another topic of conversation.

But hey, it's the truth! I like my last name. I like that nearly everyone I meet with it is most likely related to me. I like that, as far as I know, I am the only Juliet Izon in the world who you can Google. And speaking of search engine accessibility, I have, so to speak, made a name for myself ... with my name. A quick Google search reveals some of my proudest moments professionally: my very first Huffington Post article, my numerous TV and radio appearances, and, if you dig a little deeper, that amazing canon of work from my early years as an editor at the Trinity College Tripod. This is what Juliet Izon has done so far and, I hope, only a small percentage of what I will continue to do.

So, what, I'm just supposed to give it up? Part with my super sweet "Z?" Swap my place in the alphabet for -- gasp -- another letter? I'm not even going to broach the topic of the changing my Gmail address. I break out in a cold sweat just contemplating such a Herculean task.

All of this for matrimonial unity, huh? Now, don't get me wrong, I love my future husband's last name. Many people even call him by it. It's the same number of syllables as my own and even ends in the same letter, so the conversion wouldn't be terribly painful. But it's still not my name. And that, my friends, is the distilled essence of my predicament.

If I took my fianc?'s surname, a part of me feels like I'd be erasing everything that I've accomplished under my maiden name. It may be an entirely nonsensical sentiment, but it's one that sticks with me nonetheless. I don't want to have to give up a huge part of my identity just because I'm getting married. Standing together on our wedding day, I'm thrilled to be marrying someone that I am crazily, stupidly and entirely in love with. But, at least for me, marriage doesn't mean you suddenly meld into one being; it's rather two people who form a union that makes each individual that much more awesome.

I will be my husband's wife and wear that moniker with enormous pride, the same way I hope he's counting down the days until he can call himself Juliet's husband. But as for the rest of you? You can address me as Ms. Izon. Or "your highness," I suppose that's acceptable too.

Twitter unveils weapon vs. email impostors

By Benjamin Pimentel, MarketWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? Twitter on Thursday said it has begun using a technology to make it harder for impostors to send Twitter members forged emails purportedly from the social microblogging site.

Twitter?s DMARC aims to combat email imposters.

The new system, called DMARC, for ?Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance,? is aimed at making it ?extremely unlikely that most of our users will see any email pretending to be from a Twitter.com address,? Twitter said in a company blog post.

?While this protocol is young, it has already gained significant traction in the email community with all four major email providers ? AOL /quotes/zigman/577531/quotes/nls/aol AOL -0.69% ?, Gmail /quotes/zigman/93888/quotes/nls/goog GOOG +0.28% ?, Hotmail/Outlook /quotes/zigman/20493/quotes/nls/msft MSFT -1.24% ?and Yahoo Mail /quotes/zigman/59898/quotes/nls/yhoo YHOO -0.60% ?? already on board, rejecting forged emails,? Twitter said.

The announcement follows the high-profile hacking of the Twitter pages of Burger King and Jeep, and admissions by Facebook Inc. /quotes/zigman/9962609/quotes/nls/fb FB -4.37% ?and Apple Inc. /quotes/zigman/68270/quotes/nls/aapl AAPL -0.55% ?that their networks got hacked. See: Facebook, Twitter, Apple in hacker sights.

In the wake of the Twitter page hacks, the company on Tuesday posted a ?friendly reminder? to users regarding password security.

?Watch out for suspicious links, and always make sure you?re on Twitter.com before you enter your login information,? a company blog post said. ?Be cautious when clicking on links in Direct Messages.?

3 dead on Vegas Strip after hail of bullets

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

Las Vegas police are looking for a black Range Rover after a sudden burst of gunfire and a car fire led to the deaths of three people on the famed Strip, shutting the gambling boulevard down in several directions.

A Range Rover Sport with black rims pulled up to another car at a stoplight at the intersection of Las Vegas and Flamingo Boulevards around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Officer Jose Hernandez of the Las Vegas Police Department told NBC News.

The occupants of the SUV opened fire on another car, which The Associated Press reported was a Maserati. The driver and passenger of that vehicle were hit, according to Hernandez, and the car went out of control, striking four other vehicles and a taxi cab.

The cab burst into flames, killing the driver and a passenger. The driver of the Maserati was also killed, though it is not clear if the vehicle fire or the gunshots were the cause.

Three people were transported to the hospital for injuries of unknown seriousness, Hernandez said.?

Police are warning people to be careful if they spot the black SUV that fled the scene.

?We want to remind everyone that they are armed and dangerous,? Hernandez said.
