Local sports briefs: Kansas softball, tennis falls

KANSAS SOFTBALL DROPS FIRST GAME: A two-run first inning and a solid relief performance from freshman Kelsey Kessler fell one run short of clinching the Florida International Tournament championship as Kansas dropped its first game of the season to NC State, 3-2, Sunday afternoon.

Kansas (4-1) started and ended its weekend with North Carolina State (4-1), winning the first meeting via run rule on Friday before playing a much tighter game in the final contest of the weekend. Both teams tallied five hits, but a solo homer in the third broke a tie game in the Wolfpack?s favor and stood as the winning run.

KU TENNIS DROPS TO NO. 23 TULSA: The Kansas women?s tennis team couldn?t overcome an injury to its top player during Sunday?s match against No. 23 Tulsa, falling in a 5-2 battle to the Golden Hurricane at Jayhawk Tennis Center.

Junior transfer Haley Fournier ? the Jayhawks? No. 1 singles player ? was forced to sit out singles play due to an undisclosed recurring injury. The rest of the team?s singles lineup shifted up one position against Tulsa, with freshman Anastasija Trubica seeing her first dual singles action at the No. 6 spot.

Tulsa swept the Jayhawks in doubles play before taking the No. 1 and 2 singles matches in straight sets to build a quick 3-0 lead. The Hurricane features the nation?s No. 9-ranked doubles duo in Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique, as well as the No. 124 singles player (Vickers).
